Pursuit of quality

The history of coffee in northern Tanzania dates back to the 19th century. German settlers, then a colonial power, brought coffee trees from Réunion Island, near Madagascar, to northern Tanzania, where they developed the industry.

“Most plantations in northern Tanzania were established after World War I, around the 1920s. I remember seeing old maps from that time that show about 80 German immigrant families moving here and establishing small-scale coffee plantations.”
